Mia and the Moonlit Clover
Mia was a small brown bunny with one ear that folded at the tip. She lived under the old apple tree, where the roots made a door-shaped gap. The sun was going down. The sky turned orange, then pink, then soft purple.
Mia's mama was inside making the nest fluffy. "Stay close," Mama said. "It's almost sleep time." But Mia wanted one more thing. She had heard about clover that glowed silver in moonlight. She wanted to see it.
Mia hopped to the edge of the meadow. The grass was cool under her paws. A cricket chirped. The moon was just starting to come up, big and white. Mia sniffed the air. She smelled clover somewhere past the berry bushes.
She hopped carefully. The berry bushes had little thorns, so she went around. Then she saw it: a patch of clover in a circle, and the moonlight made it look silver-white, like frost. Mia sat very still and looked.
She took one bite. It tasted like regular clover, just sweet and green. But it was special because she had found it herself. A little wind blew. Mia's whiskers felt cold. She thought about her nest.
Mia hopped back the way she came. Past the berry bushes. Across the cool meadow. The moon was higher now. When she reached the apple tree, Mama was waiting by the door. "Did you find what you needed?" Mama asked. Mia nodded.
Inside, the nest was perfect. Mia curled into the warm grass. Mama tucked herself around her. "The clover was silver," Mia whispered. "I know," Mama whispered back. "It only does that once the moon is up."
Mia closed her eyes. She could still smell the clover, sweet and green. Outside, the moon climbed higher. Inside, everything was soft and still. Mia's breathing slowed. She was home. She was warm. She was asleep.
The end. Sleep tight.
