Moon Window
Bath steam drifted away. The room felt still. Mia pressed her nose to the cool glass. A round moon hung over the trees. Button the bunny sat in her arms. “Hello, moon,” she whispered. “Are you awake?”
A slow cloud slid by. The moon went soft and hid. The hallway hummed with a quiet song. The house smelled like soap and warm towels. “I will find you,” she said to the night.
She padded to the kitchen. The floor was cool. The fridge made a sleepy purr. In the dark window, a bowl shone like a tiny moon. A silver spoon looked moon-bright too. Outside, the sky cleared just a little.
There it was again, a silvery coin in the blue. Mia smiled and took three soft steps. Step, step, look up. The moon seemed to follow. Night air brushed her toes by the door. Crickets sang one, two, three.
Back in her room, she set Button to face the sky. She tucked the blanket edge under her chin. The moon had pale spots, like little cups where shadows sit. Those spots are called craters, and they hold the night’s gentle dark.
“Good night, tree. Good night, roof. Good night, moon,” she breathed. Light pooled on the rug in a soft square. It climbed the wall like slow water.
A hand smoothed her hair. The room grew even quieter. Her eyes felt warm and slow. The moon kept its place, calm and round. Blanket snug, breath easy, she drifted like a small boat on silver light.
The moon will keep watch. Sleep now.
